神的誠實極其廣大—基壽牧

聖詩作家基壽牧（Thomas Obadiah Chisholm, 1866-1960），像林肯一樣，生在肯塔基州（Kentucky）的木屋裏；也像林肯一樣，所受正式教育不多，全靠自學，靠賴神的恩典，得有所成就。還有不同的，是林肯中道崩殂，享年不永；而基壽牧得享遐齡。不過，二人對人類有所貢獻，又是相同的。
為了生活的需要，基壽牧還只十六歲，就在他讀過書的鄉村小學作教員。他愛文學，在二十一歲，任當地週報的副刊編輯。他愛慕聖經神的話，也愛慕追求聖潔。這種真誠，殷切的期求，歌唱時仿佛躍出紙上。
二十七歲那年，基壽牧寫了“主我願像你”（O To Be Like Thee）。
莫理生博士（Dr. Henry Clay Morrison後Asbury College校長）賞識這肯追求的青年，介紹他作五旬節前鋒報（Pentecostal Herald）編輯。但因健康關係，不得已辭職。
三十六歲時，接受按立為衛理公會巡迴牧師。只作了一年，就因健康再度辭職，遷至印地安那州溫諾納湖（Winona Lake）畔的農莊休養。
早年的疾病，使他不能作專業教牧，卻並沒有致他於死，疾病伴他活下去，而且活得很久。基壽牧寫了“為基督而活”（Living for Jesus）的聖詩，最能宣告自己的心志。
1916年，還只五十歲，遷到紐澤西州文崙（Vineland），從事人壽保險經紀。他倒不是由於貪愛現今的世界，走多馬的道路，而是像醫生路加一樣，因為不受雇於人，可以自由作文字事奉。他沒有作發財之想，也沒有發過財。
四分之一世紀過去了。當七十五歲那年，基壽牧寫下自己的經歷：
從早年我就多病，到現在仍然這樣，
因此我的收入一直不算豐富。
可是，我不能不說，守約施慈愛的神，
用許多奇妙的表現，供應我的需要，
使我奇異感恩不盡。
他筆下流露出：“你信實廣大”（Great Is Thy Faithfulness），成為基壽牧最為人知的作品。當有人介紹他是這首聖詩作者的時候，他總是謙卑的說：“噢，我只是一隻舊鞋！”不過，這平安福音的鞋，載着福音的信息，傳揚到全世界。
他作為一個平常的基督徒，隨神的引導安排，靜默的以文字事奉愛他的主，他的筆寫下從心裏湧出的歌頌。他的詩，有的被接受，也有的遭退回；但他並不灰心，更不以成就而驕傲，繼續知道他當作工作，工作。
基壽牧一生寫了聖詩一千二百首，其中八百首配有音樂出版，二百首成為著名的詩歌。

Living for Jesus
